Week 4

So far, in my entrepreneurial class, I am becoming really inspired by the things I am learning. I suddenly have an, “I really CAN do this” attitude. It seems that everything I am learning, especially this week, is all about…why not follow your dreams? And… You can do this as long as you have integrity, grit, and determination. It’s so strange how one week you can have all these excuses why starting an adventure just isn’t for me, then after a few inspiring reads, you are on top of the world and think why NOT me.

One of the videos I watched this week was about an “Action Hero” named Sharon Mays. Sharon started a drive-thru salad bar in Austin, Texas and it has been very successful. I really liked what she said. In her words, “What is your dream? Give it life.” I’m really learning in this class that success is truly about action. Do. Start. Work. Sharon describes how her mother was telling her to put up or shut up. Quit talking about and do it. (Another action)

One of the other principles I really learned from and enjoyed in this week’s lesson material, was the video by Tom Kelley, DO WHAT YOU LOVE. I really liked the circles that he described by Jim Collins. One of the Circles was, WHAT ARE YOU GOOD AT? Another circle was, WHAT WERE YOU BORN TO DO? And finally, the last circle was, WHAT WILL PEOPLE PAY YOU TO DO? I noticed in this trinity, as Tom had drawn these circles, there was a place where all three of the circles intersected. I feel that maybe the “sweet spot.” Now, this is business by Patty, but I think If you can find that “sweet spot” amongst what you’re good at, what you were born to do, and what would people pay you to do will be the place in which you will find the most success.

Week 3 The Formula For Success

As I am going through my Entrepreneurial class, I am learning that true success can be expected when you keep your eyes toward the ultimate goal of pleasing our father in heaven, and being honest in all you do, and being honest to all people. Remembering that you are working with REAL people and catering to them is the mark of a good businessperson.

I also learned this week from Jim Ritchie. He talks about the Formula For Success. What I liked about Jim Ritchie’s formula was that he took two formulas and combined them to make one. He took a formula that J. Paul Getty used, and one that David B. Haight taught him on his mission.

J. Paul Getty’s formula was:

1.     Get Up Early
2.     Work Hard
3.     Find (your) Oil

David B. Haight’s formula was:

1.     Get Your Education
2.     Make Your Mark
3.     Prepare Yourself To Serve/ Give Back

The combined formula for success is:

1.     Get Up Early
2.     Work Hard
3.     Get Your Education
4.     Find (your) Oil
5.     Make Your Mark
6.     Prepare Yourself To Serve/Give Back

I liked when Jim Ritchie said that if you fully grasp and understand this formula, it would ALWAYS work.

This week I want to put this formula to the test and really utilize it in my life.

I’m quite excited to see how it works for me!

‘Till next week!

Week 2

After skimming through the transcript of The Last Lecture by Randy Pausch, and watching the video clip of The Last lecture, I believe that Randy was able to achieve so many of his childhood dreams because he was aloud as a child to be creative. He also knew what a “brick wall” was intended for, not to stop us, but to prove how bad we want something.

Randy Pausch inspires dreaming. He as inspired me, and so many others. Dreaming is important. Having big dreams allows us to think more than expected, do more than expected and achieve more than expected. Having big dreams leads to change. Change is what makes this world go round!

One of my childhood dreams was to own a boutiques in New York City. I dreamt of having a corner shop filled with things that were unique and would bring pleasure to all who came in.

I haven’t made this dream come true. Real life and real things happened between then and now.

I left my childhood home to concur the world; I was on a path to own a boutique in New York City. Then, as God would have it, I met my husband. Life turned a very unexpected corner and being a wife and mother was suddenly my direction. It was odd for me, because that was the last thing on my mind.

However, seeing all these videos and reading these assigned readings for my entrepreneurial class, make me feel as though I can still make those childhood dreams happen. Nothing is impossible. But, as I have gotten older, my hopes and dreams have become different. Things that are important to me are different.

Owning a corner shop in NYC is not my goal anymore, but I know that if it were, I could still achieve it. I can have high dreams and goals. With those goals, if I hit a brick wall, I can carry on and prove just how bad I want something and just keep going.

If I want something bad enough, I just need to open my mouth, do the work, and make it happen.

My First Blog Entry

I am beginning this blog as an assignment. My desire is to make this blog a habit and use it through out my life.

This blog is a journal of things I have learned, and things I have not yet learned.

I will be able to track my progress and hold myself accountable by using this blog.

I will see the work more clearly and become more reflective by making this tool a habit.

I'm excited to make this a daily routine. I believe that by having this blog, and using it regularly, I will make larger strides towards my goals.
